Shade Styles Explained: Roller, Cellular, Woven Wood, Roman, and Sheer
A plain comparison of the five shade styles Denver homes use most, what each one is actually good at, where it fails, and how to pick without guessing.

There are five shade styles that cover almost every Denver home: roller and solar, cellular, woven wood, Roman, and sheer shadings. Each one is built differently and is genuinely better at one job than the others. Pick by the job the window has to do, not by the picture you liked.
Roller and solar shades: best for views and glare
A single flat fabric on a tube. Solar shades use an open weave rated by openness percentage, so they cut glare and UV while keeping the view. They are the cleanest looking option, the easiest to motorize, and the most affordable per opening. They are not private at night, when the lit side becomes the visible side. Compare them directly in our Roman versus roller comparison.
Cellular shades: best for insulation
Honeycomb cells trap air, which is why they measurably reduce heat loss on a January night and heat gain on a July afternoon. They come in light-filtering and blackout, stack very small, and fit shallow frames. The tradeoff is that they read as a functional shade rather than a design statement. Details are in the energy-efficient cellular shades guide.
Woven wood shades: best for texture and warmth
Natural reeds, grasses, and bamboo woven into a shade that filters light into something warm and dappled. They bring organic texture to rooms full of hard surfaces, which suits Denver mountain-modern interiors. They need a privacy liner if the room requires one, since the raw weave is see-through.
Roman shades: best for softness and design
Fabric that folds into horizontal pleats as it lifts, giving you drapery-quality material in a shade footprint. Flat fold reads tailored and modern, relaxed reads soft and coastal. They are the most designed of the five and the most expensive per opening. Start with the complete Roman shades guide and the Roman shade cost guide.
Sheer shadings: best for soft light with control
Fabric vanes suspended between two sheer facings, so you can tilt for light and privacy at once or raise the whole thing. They diffuse harsh Denver light beautifully and are a strong choice for front-facing rooms where you want daylight without exposure.
Which style is right for each room?
Bedrooms want cellular or Roman with a blackout liner, mounted outside the frame to stop side light. Living rooms and great rooms want solar shades layered under drapery. Kitchens want roller or woven wood that wipes clean and resists moisture. Home offices want solar shades sized to the camera angle. Our room guides go deeper: living room, kitchen, and home office.
Can you mix styles in one house?
Yes, and most well-designed homes do. The rule is to keep one consistent color family and one consistent hardware finish, then vary the style by function. That reads intentional. Five random styles in five random colors reads accidental.
Which styles can be motorized?
All five. Roller and cellular motorize most cleanly and affordably, Roman and woven wood cost more because of the lift mechanics. If a window is tall, behind furniture, or in a two-story wall, motorize it or it will never get used. See motorized shade services.
How do you choose with confidence?
