Window Treatment Installation in Denver: What Professional Measuring and Mounting Involve
What actually happens when custom blinds, shades, and drapery are professionally measured and installed in a Denver home, and why the install decides whether a treatment looks custom or looks close enough.
Updated September 14, 2026

Professional installation is what separates a custom window treatment from an expensive one that hangs crooked. The fabric, the lining, and the hardware all matter, but the measure and the mount decide whether a shade sits flush in the opening, whether light leaks down the sides, and whether the treatment still operates smoothly in five years. Here is exactly what a professional install involves in a Denver home, and what to expect on the day.
What happens at the measure appointment?
Every opening is measured at three points across the width and three down the height, because almost no window is perfectly square. We record the shallowest depth of the frame, note the trim style, check for cranks, alarm sensors, tile sills, and out-of-plumb walls, then decide inside or outside mount opening by opening. Those decisions are documented before anything is ordered. Our guide to measuring for custom blinds and shades walks through the inside versus outside mount call in detail.
Why can a homeowner measure not be used for a custom order?
Because custom treatments are cut to the sixteenth of an inch and are not returnable. A quarter inch of error on an inside mount either binds the shade against the frame or leaves a visible light gap. When we measure, the measurement is our responsibility, and so is the remake if something is off. That single fact is usually worth more than any discount.
How long does installation take?
Most homes take between two and five hours. A single room of shades goes up in under an hour. Drapery with custom rods, returns, and wall anchors takes longer, and motorized treatments add time for charging, pairing, and programming scenes. We install the whole order in one visit whenever the full shipment has arrived, so you are not living with half a house dressed.
What does the installer actually do?
Brackets are located and leveled, anchored into the frame or into solid backing behind the drywall, then the treatment is hung, squared, and tested through a full cycle. Valances and fascia go on last. Cords are secured with tensioners, always, with no exception. Everything is vacuumed, packaging is carried out, and you are walked through operation, cleaning, and the warranty before we leave.
What is different about installing in a Denver home?
Two things. Older Denver bungalows and Victorians have plaster walls and out-of-square openings that need shims and sometimes outside mounts to look right. Newer foothills and mountain builds have tall two-story glass, deep sills, and metal-clad frames that call for specific fasteners and often for motorization. Read the two-story window treatment guide if your great room glass is out of reach.
Do motorized treatments need special installation?
Yes. Beyond the bracket work, motorized shades need power planning, hub placement, remote and app pairing, limit setting, and grouping into scenes so a whole wall moves together. We do all of that on install day and leave the system labeled and working. See motorized shade services and the motorized shade cost guide.
What can go wrong when installation is skipped or rushed?
Light gaps down the sides of a bedroom blackout shade. Shades that rub and eventually shred their fabric edge. Drapery rods pulled out of drywall by the weight of lined panels. Shutters that will not close because the frame was out of square and nobody shimmed it. Every one of these is a measuring or mounting failure, not a product failure.
Does installation come with the treatment?
Professional measuring and installation are part of every custom order we place. There is no separate labor surprise at the end. Pricing for the products themselves is broken down in our Denver cost and pricing guides, including plantation shutters and custom drapery.
